the Real Facts about Cyanide
The Cyantists and this website are dedicated to the generation,
collection and dissemination of reliable technical information
about the natural and manmade sources of cyanide. The Cyantists
are a small group of individuals who have devoted entire careers
to the scientific understanding of cyanide and its interaction
with industry, the environment and society.
How
dangerous is Cyanide?
According
to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, during
2001 there were 304 cases of cyanide poisonings in the US, 14
of which resulted in death and none of which occurred in the mining
or plating industries.
Coincidently, 14 persons also died of poisoning by aspirin in
2001.
ORE
RESERVE DEFINITIONS
Before a mining company can determine if their "find"
qualifies as a mine, there are a number of "definition steps"
that are used in discussing the project.
Mineral
Resource
A mineral resource is a concentrated occurrence of natural material
in such form, quantity and grade that can be reasonably extracted
economically. Specific geologic evidence provides knowledge of
the location, quantity (tonnage), quality (grade), continuity
and geologic characteristics.
Mineral
resources are classified as indicated, inferred or measured.
Mineral
Reserve
A mineral reserve in the economically mineable portion of a mineral
resource as defined by a preliminary feasibility study. The study
must include adequate information on mining, processing, metallurgy,
economics and any other factors that would influence the economic
extraction. The mineral reserve includes all allowances for dilution
and other losses that may occur during mining of the reserve.
Mineral
reserves are classified as probable or proven.
